The research problem the Collaborative Development Tools Project must answer is can pair programming, where the pair can be more than two, be done using a tool that permits developers to interact in real-time across to internet. Specific issues that must be addressed are can such a tool be created, how many developers could realistically work together on the same piece of production code using the tool, how can the tool synchronize each developer’s view of the source code when one or more of them are editing it simultaneously, and what are the protocols and algorithms needed to make the tool work in real-time.
