Borland to Lead Eclipse Graphical Modeling Framework (GMF)

Borland Software has announced its intention to lead a proposal for a new graphical modeling framework to support OMG MDA.

News release from CIO Today:

Borland Software today announced an expansion in the company's support for Eclipse, an open-source development platform that supports multiple languages and technologies.

According to a company statement, Borland hopes to play a more prominent role in advancing Eclipse technology by joining the Eclipse Foundation Board of Directors as a Strategic Developer. The company also will commit a full-time development team to expand the Eclipse platform and contribute to new technology pushes, such as modeling.

The company also plans to expand its use of Eclipse as a platform across its Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) product line, hoping this new move, along with Borland's support for MicrosoftRelevant Products/Services from Microsoft Visual Studio, will continue to give customers stronger ALM technologies on the platforms of their choice while helping reduce the growing complexity of heterogeneous IT environments.

In an effort to drive ALM advancements on the Eclipse platform, Borland also will lead the proposal for a new graphical modeling framework that would bridge and extend the existing modeling technology within the Eclipse community.

Modeling continues to gain traction as companies look to reduce IT complexity, improve team efficiency and collaboration, and more closely connect IT and business requirements. It is an important element of Borland's strategy.

This announcement further solidifies Eclipse leadership in the Java development environment space. This leaves Sun, Oracle and JetBrains as the remaining IDE vendors that have yet to signifying a strategic relationship with the Eclipse foundation. BEA has previously announced its migration towards the Eclipse platform for future IDE development. Borland's press release can be found here.

An article on eWeek provides more information.

Kerpan said. "The IDE is commoditized so you have to deliver higher value up the stack." In addition, Kerpan said renewed innovation in software delivery changes the game. And this has a leveling effect in which people pursue higher value solutions, he said.

So Borland's contribution will be a new GMF (Graphical Modeling Framework) that integrates with the Eclipse Modeling Framework to better connect development teams to the business side of enterprises. Borland will work on this GMF both in Eclipse and in its own products, Kerpan said.

This will mean a focus on business integration, visualization and predictability, and teamwork infrastructures. "You'll see us deliver higher value products across the board," Kerpan said.
